About VCSSCamp Six

Our now annual VCSSCamp in Birmingham is happening again!

You have said how useful you’ve found previous VCSSCamp unconferences in Birmingham so we are bringing VCSSCamp back home as a space for people from VCS Local Infrastructure Organisations (that’s CVSs and Volunteer Centres etc) to meet and talk about the ways they use (or don’t use) digital tools and technology in their work.

So if you work in, lead, govern or volunteer for an local support or infrastructure organisation and you want to get together with like-minded people for a day to discuss the important issues your organisation faces, then VCSSCamp is for you!

The day will be an unconference format so there is no set plan or agenda (or sales pitches) before the day starts. All that’s needed is your desire to talk about the many ways that social media and digital technology has changed the landscape we work in, and as Infrastructure Organisations what we are doing, or could be doing about and with it.

This event is intended for staff, managers, trustees and volunteers primarily working for or with local support organisations. Whilst we won’t refuse a booking from others, due to capacity of the venue we may have to hold back bookings from other organisations. We hope you understand.

You can also read all about our previous VCSSCamp events held in Birmingham in 2013 in 2014 and 2015 in Barnsley in 2014 and in London in 2015.

Booking a place.

Bookings are NOW OPEN, you can get your FREE place here. There are several ticket releases in the run up to the event – be sure to check back on Eventbrite or follow us on Twitter @VCSSCamp for the latest ticket news.

Where is it?

The venue is the same as last year at Innovation Birmingham Campus, Holt Street, Birmingham Science Park, Aston, Birmingham, B7  4BB. (See here for directions).

When does it take place?

It’s going to be held on Thursday 23rd June 2016, from 10.00am-4.00pm.
(We know there is another ‘event’ happening on this date and will be sure to keep in touch with how it develops!)

The main event will be followed by an optional drink … which will inevitably lead to a curry – anyone welcome.

Who are ‘we’?

Pauline Roche and Paul Webster – you can read more about us on the ‘Who are we?’ page.

Our Supporters

VCSSCamp wouldn’t be possible (or have such nice sandwiches and endless tea!) without the support of these lovely sponsors and supporters. Innovation Birmingham, RnR Organisation and UK Gov Camp. You can read more about each of these organisations here.

What’s a VCS infrastructure organisation and who should come?

Examples of infrastructure organisations in the voluntary and community sector include CVSs – councils for voluntary service (sometimes also known as local voluntary action), volunteer centres, local support providers and other specialist local membership organisations. They are organisations covering a town or borough that support other local community action  organisations.

The NCVO Big Assist website explains what is meant by an Infrastructure Organisation or there is a short summary you can download. (36KB PDF)

At this event we welcome trustees, managers, all staff and volunteers from all local infrastructure organisations.

Not from an infrastructure organisation but want to come?

We’re really sorry, but we can only fit so many people in the room, and for this event we really want to give people from infrastructure organisations an opportunity to meet and talk with each other. There are other events where we can all come together … if you’re struggling to find any of these, let us know and we’ll have a look for you.

I can’t come, how else can I take part?

Use the hashtag #VCSSCamp to be part of the discussion from now on, including on the day; blog your thoughts and add them to this site under ‘Comments’; we hope to use Storify or something similar to gather together people’s thoughts and writing about the day.

What will we do on the day?

That is up to the people who come!

We’re running this event in an unconference style, so participants will suggest discussion topics based on the overall theme of social media/digital technology and infrastructure support. We’ve put some ideas to get you started over here and the Plan for the day over here. This is a blog site so feel free to talk to us and others on it – add your ideas, musings or frustrations about social media and infrastructure support below, or on the ideas page.

And ask us any questions you have about the event, here or by tweeting or emailing us.

What shall I bring?

If you have a smartphone, tablet and/or laptop, bring any or all of them along (don’t forget to charge your batteries). Our hosts will provide the wifi.

If you don’t have access to any of these devices, either your own, or one belonging to your infrastructure organisation, don’t worry – you won’t be the only one at the event without one, but maybe by the end of the day, one of the things you’ll be thinking about is the kind of digital equipment to which you might like to have access!

It sounds brilliant! Where do I book?

Head over to our Eventbrite page to book your free ticket.

Please do come along, it would be great to see you!

  1. So, this will be my 4th VCSSCamp in Birmingham, and although still employed by Telford & Wrekin CVS, my role has changed completely. I am really looking forward to seeing what tech I might be able to bring to this role in the Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust; looking at health and wellbeing apps if possible and who knows what else! Plus of course to say hi to friends made and meet new folks too.
